How Poor people can benfit from Computer and Internet

Manohar Lakshmipathi does not own a computer. In fact, in India workmen like Mr. Manohar, a house painter, are usually forbidden to touch clients’ computers. So you can imagine Mr. Manohar’s wonder as he sat in a swiveling chair in front of a computer, dictating his date of birth, phone number and work history to a secretary. Afterward, a man took his photo. Then, with a click of a mouse, Mr. Manohar’s page popped onto the World Wide Web, the newest profile on an Indian Web site called Babajob.com . Babajob seeks to bring the social-networking revolution popularized by Facebook and MySpace to people who do not even have computers — the world’s poor. And the start-up is just one example of an unanticipated byproduct of the outsourcing boom: many of the hundreds of multinationals and hundreds of thousands of technology workers who are working here are turning their talents to fighting the grinding poverty that surrounds them. “In Redmond, you don’t see 7-year-olds begging on the street

ASUS 200USD lpatop Powered by Linux

There's a new player in the extreme budget market, and this one isn't intended for developing nations. Meet the Asus Eee PC 701 -- an ultraportable laptop that costs as little as £169. The three 'e's represent Asus' vision of it being "easy to learn, easy to work, easy to play". The Eee PC is also available from other vendors including RM, where it's known as the RM Asus miniBook. We have reviewed Asus' £219 version here, which will be available to buy on 14 November. Design The Eee PC is one of the smallest laptops on the market. At 225 by 35 by 165mm, it's about the size of a hardback book, and weighs 920g. Its petite dimensions give it a toy-like appearance, but this is countervailed by the pearl-white finish, which gives it a touch of sophistication. Ultimately, the Eee PC looks equally at home on the catwalk or in a child's playpen -- it is what you make of it. Because it's so small, some sacrifices have been made. The keyboard is

SCP/WINSCP is a client that uses SSH to transfer file from a computer to another, Since it uses SSH it utilize encryption for everything transmitted, which gives you peace of mind. This Secured file transfer is called SFTP (Secured FTP) We need to distinguish between SFTP and FTPS (FTP is using FTP with the help of SSL/TLS to transfer files securely) most of the known FTP clients support FTPS. So to summarize FTPS is FTP under SSL. SFTP is transferring files over SSH (port 22). WINSCP has a Commander interface and Synchronization option Link h3r3 Screenshot:

World's lowest cost Linux thin client?

Image
Bangkok-based Norhtec has unveiled a sub-$85 mini-PC claimed to be the most affordable Linux thin client system to date. The "ultra-low-power" MicroClient JrSX is based on a 300MHz x86-compatible SoC (system-on-chip) and includes both CompactFlash and 2.5-inch hard drive storage options, along with 10/100Mbps Ethernet networking. Like all of Norhtec's MicroClients, the JrSX is passively cooled and designed to handle high temperatures and humidity. Intended as a low-cost 32-bit embedded x86 platform for linking peripherals to the Internet, the system is ideal, according to Norhtec, for integrating security, access control, and other sensor systems. It can run any Linux distribution compiled to support floating point emulation, the company claims. . Norhtec's sub-$85 Linux box targets embedded and thin client applications The JrSX ships with 128MB of DDR RAM, three USB 2.0 slots, one Type I/II CompactFlash slot, and a 10/100Mbps Ethernet LAN port. Google's MapReduce

Google's distributed storage architecture for data is combined with distributed execution of the software that parses and analyzes it. To keep software developers from spending too much time on the arcana of distributed programming, Google invented MapReduce as a way of simplifying the process. According to a 2004 Google Labs paper, without MapReduce the company found "the issues of how to parallelize the computation, distribute the data and handle failures" tended to obscure the simplest computation "with large amounts of complex code." Much as the GFS offers an interface for storage across multiple servers, MapReduce takes programming instructions and assigns them to be executed in parallel on many computers. It breaks calculations into two parts—a first stage, which produces a set of intermediate results, and a second, which computes a final answer. The concept comes from functional programming languages such as Lisp (Google's version is implemented in C+

How Google Works!

Image
Number have never been confirmed on the size of Google's Infrastructure size. Some reports estimate that Google maintains over 450,000 servers, arranged in racks located in clusters in cities around the world, with major centers in Mountain View, California; Virginia; Atlanta, Georgia; Dublin, Ireland; and new facilities constructed in The Dalles, Oregon and Saint-Ghislain, Belgium. In 2009 Google is planning one of its first sites in the upper midwest to open in Council Bluffs, Iowa close to abundant wind power resources for fulfilling green energy objectives and proximate to fiber optic communications links. When an attempt to connect to Google is made, Google's DNS servers perform load balancing to allow the user to access Google's content most rapidly. This is done by sending the user the IP address of a cluster that is not under heavy load, and is geographically proximate to them. Each cluster has thousands of servers, and upon connection to a cluster further load balan

PayPal says "Open Source Essential to Success"

Image
PayPal transacts more than US$1,500 every second of every day, with millions of people around the world relying on the robustness of its system. It comes as a surprise to many people that PayPal runs such a large financial services company on an open source platform, but that's precisely how we're able to deal with the two competing demands our business model places on us: security and innovation. The economic, operational, development and security advantages of open source and Linux put us in the perfect position to both grow and innovate in a safe and secure manner. Here are four reasons why we love our open source system -- and four tips for you if you're thinking of making the switch Economics That Can't Be Beat Our system environment, built entirely in-house by PayPal developers, consists of thousands of Linux-based, single-rack Unity servers, which host our Web-presentation layer, middleware and user interface. Microsoft faces Anitrust

Five More states in USA declares Microsoft in Antitrust judgment until November 12, 2012. The seven states make multiple claims to justify their request to the judge. Firstly, they claim that there have been "continuing problems" with Microsoft's efforts to document its server communications protocols. The states cite a recent report by enterprise software firm IconNicholson that expresses concern that not all "necessary CPs had been disclosed." Because of the delay in receiving full documentation for the protocols, during which Microsoft "increased its share of the server market," the states believe that further extension of the judgment is warranted. Secondly, the report laments the state of OEM web browser bundling, saying that "no major OEM currently distributes a browser other than Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE)." This is important due to the rise of new middleware platforms (such as Adobe's AIR and Microsoft's own Silverligh

Microsoft Will Buy Open-Source Companies

Microsoft's detente with the open-source world is growing stronger by the minute. Steve Ballmer said today that he wouldn't consider an open-source-based business model a deterrent to buying a company Microsoft found interesting. Wine is Getting Good !!

As it says at Wine HQ : Wine is a translation layer (a program loader) capable of running Windows applications on Linux and other POSIX compatible operating systems. Windows programs running in Wine act as native programs would, running without the performance or memory usage penalties of an emulator, with a similar look and feel to other applications on your desktop. The Wine project started in 1993 as a way to support running Windows 3.1 programs on Linux. Bob Amstadt was the original coordinator, but turned it over fairly early on to Alexandre Julliard, who has run it ever since. Over the years, ports for other Unixes have been added, along with support for Win32 as Win32 applications became popular. I run all Linux all the time on all my boxes at home. But, at the high school where I teach computer science, it's MS-Windows XP. In fact, our teacher attendance keeping and electronic gradebooks are MS-Windows programs run from a Netware server. Ubuntu Server Push

Canonical plans on Thursday to release "Gutsy Gibbon," the Ubuntu Linux version 7.10 that the company hopes will lay the foundation for a serious push into the server and other markets six months from now. That's when Gutsy Gibbon's sequel, "Hardy Heron," is scheduled to arrive. Gutsy Gibbon will have the usual Ubuntu support life span--18 months--but Hardy Heron will be the company's second version to feature long-term support, which lasts three years for the desktop product and five years for the server. Secure SSH against brute force

I have certain measures to secure SSH against Brute force attack (what is Brute force click h3r3 ?) I'm writing this post to reply a question on Shorewall mailing list, and I got the idea that it may be relevant to many others of us. I recommend doing the following but please remember it is all relative measure on how you want to do it ! 0) Disable root login and use "sudo" or "su" 1) Options like these help (in /etc/sshd_config): MaxAuthTries 4 MaxStartups 1:3:6 2) Disable password authentication in ssh and enable Certificate based authentication. 3) BlockHosts BlockHosts , is a script written in Python, is easier to set up, maintain, and configure. The idea behind BlockHosts is to continuously scan a syslog file for SSHD failed login attempts, and add the IP addresses listed there (after a predetermined number of attempts have been exceeded) to the system's /etc/hosts.deny file -- a different approach from that of Daemon Shield, which us

Dutch Consumer Association declares war on Vista

The Dutch Consumers Association has called for a boycott of Windows Vista, after the software giant refused to offer free copies of Windows XP to users who are having problems with Vista. A spokesman for the Consumentenbond says that the product has many teething problems, and "is just not ready". The association claims it received over 5000 complaints about Vista. Many printers and other hardware failed to work, the association says, computers crash frequently and peripherals are very slow. On Thursday the association met Microsoft Netherland to discuss the problems. But offering XP to users is not a solution, according to Microsoft, which notes that many new peripherals are developed explicitly for Vista. However, the Consumers Association points out that Microsoft offers XP to business clients when they are having problems. To combat critics, Microsoft Netherlands launched a website on Friday which addresses many issues raised by the Consumentenbond. In forums, many Dutch

Security Expolits Auction

A controversial marketplace for security exploits and vulnerabilities said it has exceeded expectations with the submission of more than 150 vulnerabilities in its first two months of operations. WabiSabiLabi ( site h3r3 ) - Wabi-sabi (in Japanese katakanaワビサビ) represents a comprehensive Japanese world view or aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transience. The phrase comes from the two words wabi and sabi. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete". It is a concept derived from the Buddhist assertion of the Three marks of existence — Anicca, or in Japanese, 無常 (mujyou), impermanence- encourages security researchers to sell their findings to vetted buyers. Herman Zampariolo, chief exec of WSLabi which runs the WabiSabiLabi marketplace, said that the quality of the submitted vulnerabilities is as important as their quantity. Vulnerabilities on the marketplace have had selling prices ranging between 100 to 15,000

Zend crafts PHP application server

Zend Technologies is turning to application server vendors in the next phase of its work fine-tuning PHP for enterprise development. Self-appointed PHP Steward Zend has had talks with unnamed middleware partners with a view to improving the performance of its favorite scripting language on their application servers, by putting PHP inside the application server. The thinking is that the current PHP bridge that's used to instantiate Java objects and that currently connects PHP to the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), might - instead - connect to the Enterprise Java Bean (EJB) container. A direct connection would boost performance of PHP and Java applications by eliminating the delay that currently exists between the JVM and the EJB container.

Why LCD prices drop ?

If you want to know why LCD prices drop, I can tell you it is Simple. It is due to the New Technology called OLED and/or SED. OLED: The development of OLED technology stretches right back to the 1950s, but the first demonstration of the kind of screens we know today took place in 1996. The technique utilises organic compounds that generate light when they're fed with an electric current. Deposit tiny drops of a given compound onto a glass or plastic panel and sandwich it between a grid of positive and negative electrodes and you've got a simple, single colour OLED panel. Combine three of these into one and you have the basis for a three-colour - red, green and blue - panel capable of displaying colour pictures. Because OLED panels generate their own light, they don't need a separate light source the way an LCD panel does. That not only helps reduce their power consumption - up to 40 per cent less than LCD, it's claimed - but leads to better colour reproduction. The trou

Booting Linux from Flash

Link h3r3 Guys, If you wonder why I copy and paste the content of a link below, cuz simply those links and servers may die, but having them here on Google Hosted space - BlogSpot - I think they will be available till the Nuclear war on Earth- the Big Bang Theory -. Booting Linux from Flash like my computers to be as quiet as possible: if a computer is emitting very little sound, that makes it easier to live with. The noise a computer makes is especially important when it's in a home theatre situation, or acting as a media server; if a HTPC is itself throwing out lots of noise, that detracts from the sound of the movie being played. The ideal case, of course, is for there to be no moving parts: things that move or spin inevitably have friction, and that causes noise. I've tried to eliminate everything that spins from my setup: I have a CPU that doesn't need a fan on the heatsink, and a fanless power supply. However, there's one thing left that is spinning, and that'
