Ubuntu One - the Cloud Aware Linux

Ubuntu One , now in the closed beta phase, enables the exchange of files between Ubuntu 9.04 computers over the Internet. Anyone wanting to participate in the beta test can request an access code , which is required to access Ubuntu's Launchpad . Ubuntu One users with the Free plan get 2GB of storage space. For US$ 10 per month, users get 10GB. To use the Ubuntu One service, the user downloads the software via the PPA service and installs it. Detailed instructions are available on the Ubuntu One website. The website does not say how long the beta phase lasts. The service is reminiscent of Dropbox , but has the advantage of working cross-platform and offering some additional features. Also missing on the Ubuntu One pages is information about privacy and security when transmitting data.

Malaysia to Switch Government Agencies to Open Source

KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (Mampu) expects all government agencies to implement open source software (OSS) by end of next year. To date, 462 agencies from a total of 720 agencies have implemented Open Source Software, which managed to provide a savings of more than RM47 million, said Mampu deputy director of ICT (information and communications technology) policy and planning division, Tan King Ing. "We had utilised the OSS development model for rapid development of product at a lower cost by building upon existing solutions," she said at a media briefing here today. Eight OSS products have been developed for use by all public sector agencies, she told reporters. To further contribute to the industry, Mampu and Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) will host the 2009 MSC Malaysia Open Source Conference from May 31 to June 3.
