Nasa opens up space image library

Nasa is to make its huge collection of historic photographs, film and video available to the public for the first time. A partnership with the non-profit Internet Archive will see 21 major Nasa imagery collections merged into a single searchable online resource. The Nasa Images website is expected to go live this week. The launch is the first step in a five-year partnership that will add millions of images and thousands of hours of video and audio content, with enhanced search and viewing capabilities and new user features. Over time, the integration of Nasaimages.org will become more seamless and comprehensive with the main Nasa site. "This partnership enables Nasa to provide a vast collection of imagery from one searchable source, unlocking a new treasure trove for students, historians, enthusiasts and researchers," said Nasa deputy administrator Shana Dale. "This new resource also will enable the agency to digitise and preserve historical content now not available o

FaceBook , I hate you - New Security Flaw in FaceBook-

A New Security flaw in Facebook arised, Details are below : Jul 25 2008 : Social networking site Facebook has experienced a data breach which put millions of users at risk of ID fraud, an IT security firm has revealed. During a public beta test of a new version of the site, Facebook accidentally exposed its members' full date of birth, reports UK-based Sophos . The breach included members who had specified they wanted the information kept secret. Anyone logging on to Facebook during the breach would have been able to see other members' date of birth, regardless of privacy settings in place. Facebook, which has around 80 million active users worldwide, has now fixed the problem, Sophos says. This follows another breach in March 2008, where users' photos could be seen by anyone. These breaches highlight the problems associated with social networking sites, warns fraud prevention firm Equifax . "Access to the date of birth of millions of users provides a golden opportun

Attack code published for DNS flaw

The urgency to patch Dan Kaminsky’s DNS cache poisoning vulnerability just went up a few notches. Exploit code for the flaw, which allows the insertion of malicious DNS records into the cache of the target nameserver, has been added to Metasploit, a freely distributed attack/pen-testing tool. According to Metasploit creator HD Moore (left), who teamed up with researcher Druid to create the exploit, a DNS service has also been created to assist with the exploit. We spoke about the DNS patch h3r3

The Zeros bug in WEP and Centrino 2

That's the conclusion drawn by writer Frank Ohlhorst, who's been testing a pair of Centrino laptops and found they wouldn't talk to access points from different vendors whenever he set the base-stations to use 64-bit or 128-bit WEP security and keys containing nothing but zeros in hex. Now, you could argue that no one should be using WEP, and certainly not with a 'guessable' key like '0000000000', but there it is. If you set up your access point that way, your Centrino 2 notebook won't be able to use it. That's a bug in anyone's book, even if, as Frank admits, it's "very, very minor". And Centrino 2's barely out the door. It's not a glitch that manifests itself with WPA or with non-zero WEP keys, of whatever key length. It's got nothing to do with the OS - the access points work with older laptops running a range of operating systems. .

Freedomtoaster

The Freedom Toaster is both a concept and a physical machine. As a concept, the Freedom Toaster is a bandwidth substitute. It is a way of moving massive amounts of information from a variety of sources, including the Internet, to the remote end user without the infrastructure that is usually required. Currently it is a system for disseminating Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and content (operating systems, productivity and business software, community e-books e-learning packages). In physical form the Freedom Toaster is a low cost computer, with CD/DVD-burning devices and a web browser enabled touch screen interface assembled into wh looks like a vending machine. People are able to use the Freedom Toaster by touching the various menu options on the touch screen, and following the instructions that follow. The name "Freedom Toaster" was chosen because it uses Linux, a free license Operating System, and within the language of Linux users the act of burning a CD is termed &

Google Media Server Released

Media Centers are the new trend. They’re popping up everywhere and the software companies are doing their best to keep up with the new trend. Enter Google who have released their Google Media Server. Google’s touting it as a way, “to bridge the gap between Google and your TV”. While it might not be a revolutionary idea, Google is doing it a bit differently with the ability to download the program onto any UPnP-enabled device, such as a PlayStation 3. As PCs move from the office to the TV room, expect to see much more of this type of thing from Google and other tech companies trying to be a part of the transition. The tool is a part of the Google Gadgets garage; and works with Google Desktop Search to find all of the media on your computer and put it into one nice browsable place. The one feature that makes it stand out is the ability to view YouTube videos and pictures in Picasa from within the application. It’s still in beta right now, and you might want to wait a little while before

ICANN allowing domains to end in any letters

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has approved what is being seen as the biggest expansion of Internet domains for 40 years. The expansion will allow any combination of letters to be used at the end of a domain name. So, instead of being limited to the current 21 top-level domains such as .com or .org, you will be visiting sites ending in .geek, .nyc, .cola etc. This will also allow for other languages to be used including Chinese, Japanese and Arabic. Paul Twomey, CEO of ICANN said: The Board today accepted a recommendation from its global stakeholders that it is possible to implement many new names to the Internet, paving the way for an expansion of domain name choice and opportunity … The potential here is huge. It represents a whole new way for people to express themselves on the Net … It’s a massive increase in the ‘real estate’ of the Internet. The new domains will not be available to everyone, however, and don’t expect to be buying them

Open Source Router from NetGear

The open-source community is booming as always. Hardware manufacturers have seen the potential for growth and profit in releasing products that can be tweaked by the coders among us, and they seem to be committed to releasing more and more as time goes on NETGEAR has announced their new WGR614L model router. Why buy a router without functions and create them yourself when you can buy one that has all of those features built-in? The honest answer is that you’re a geek. The answer those geeks would give you is that they can do it better than NETGEAR can. The router does have a good base to work with, including a 240 MHz MIPS32® CPU core with 16 KB of instruction cache, 16 KB of data cache, 1 KB of pre-fetch cache, and incorporates 4 MB of flash memory and 16 MB of RAM. In addition to an external 2 dBi antenna, the WGR614L integrates a second internal diversity antenna to provide enhanced performance and range. The router supports free open source Linux®-based Tomato and DD-WRT firmware
