Skype alternative but Open Source

Skype is very contradicting to Open Source spirit - It uses proprietary closed and encrypted protocol (closed also means weak); - Written using obfuscation in software (decryption and checks also uses additional n800 power and resources) Skype Detailed Analyzes that I enjoyed reading - WhitePaper from BlackHat Europe, March 2006 - http://www.secdev.org/conf /skype_BHEU06.pdf - According to latest reports it reads sensitive user information (many /etc files, Firefox Profile, and many others) and nobody knows why (because software is closed source and obfuscated) and how it can be used by crackers. Detailed discussion at Skype forum could be found here http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=95261 So, Wengo is viable as alternative to the Skype. What is Wengo ? Wengo is an Open Source Software for IP communication that competes with Skype in features , User Interface, and it almost runs on all Operating System (Linux, MacOS X, Window$) Why Wengo ? Google Desktop and Security, Privacy!

Without scrutiny, highly usable software that neglects security can seem heroic and revolutionary. Such may be the case for Google Desktop. Most users see the web-meets-desktop search capabilities and don't consider the security implications of making the boundary between google.com and the desktop so seductively porous. Particularly troubling is the potential for an attacker to access information, documents, and possibly executables through Google Desktop via flaws (XSS in particular) in Google’s website. In February Yair Amit et. al. found a vulnerability that could allow remote attackers access to data and functionality through Google Desktop. Rsnake has also pointed out some existing Google XSS vulnerabilities on his blog at ha.ckers.org . Also, consider that Google Desktop keeps a fairly sizable index and cache for rapid search that by default is unencrypted. This index contains an amazing amount of historical data: It retains previous versions of files, web-based email c

Open Source and Microsoft

People don't know that Microsoft releases project/program under Open Source license. So let us declare it here and list those projects that I know. Microsoft kept attacking Open Source and questioning its quality as a matter of attack, and now we find it releasing Open Source, that after her alliance with Novell. Details goes during the post, and I hope that people find and know that Open Source is not bad, and even MicroSoft is going for it now CodePlex (an imitation to the name of Google Plex,Microsoft cant make something original) : http://www.codeplex.com/ h3r3 what is CodePlex read it h3r3 So, Please Micro$oft stop saying that Open Source is not the thing. Also, integration with libtiff (which would allow you to use compressed TIFF as input) was configured by default, but it was not working properly. You might try configuring it with libtiff, as that would allow compressed TIFF image input: # ./configure If you later find that it doesn't recognize text, reconfigure it without libtiff: # ./configure --without-libtiff The build is done as expected: # make Configure for version 1.03 also indicated that make install was broken. I managed to figure out the basics of installation by trial and error. First, copy the executable from ccmain/tesseract to a directory on your path (for example, /usr

Open-Source ATI Driver Gets TV-Out Support

Image
Thanks to recent commits in the RandR 1.2 branch for the open-source X.Org Radeon driver, it's now possible to use S-Video and composite TV output on your ATI graphics card without any patches. This is not limited to the R200 series but will also work with the R300 series and theoretically any graphics card supported by the xf86-video-ati driver. In this guide have outlined the instructions for enabling TV output support from the Radeon driver git code as well as some of the current limitations. The commits in the RandR 1.2 branch earlier this month by Alex Deucher brought in initial TV-Out support (as a result of GATOS relicensing its code ). However, some of the initial limitations include only 800 x 600 resolution supported, composite and S-Video support with no component support, and no TV-Out detection support. Below are the basic steps needed to checkout the xf86-video-ati driver from the randr-1.2 branch and then to build and install the driver. X server 1.3 is

IBM and Novell Join Forces to Support Growing Demand for Open Source SAN FRANCISCO (LinuxWorld Conference & Expo)— 07 Aug 2007— At the opening of the LinuxWorld/Next Generation Data Center trade show in San Francisco, IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Novell today announced a new agreement to join forces to capture a larger piece of the growing open source application server market. Under the agreement, Novell will deliver and support WebSphere Application Server Community Edition (WAS CE) as part of SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server, making it the industry's most comprehensive open source-based server offering. The agreement comes on the heels of the one millionth distribution of WAS CE, IBM's open source-based application server, which is based on Apache Geronimo and free to download and use. IBM and Novell will offer support and migration tools to help customers using JBoss to quickly and easily move to WAS CE. Combining WA

Micro$oft is going OPEN SOURCE !!!

o one would have believed me if I had said five years ago that Microsoft would have a page on its Web site called “ Open Source at Microsoft ” with the following remarkably sane and reasonable statement on the subject: Microsoft is focused on helping customers and partners succeed in a heterogeneous technology world. This starts with participating and contributing to a broad range of choices for developing and deploying software, including open source approaches and applications. From thousands of lines of code and scripts on MSDN and TechNet, to open source applications like IronPython, ASP.NET AJAX, SharePoint Learning Kit, and WiX on CodePlex and SourceForge, Microsoft is continually growing the number of products released with open source access. That's right: Microsoft has released not one but several pieces of code as open source. Moreover, it's submitting some of its home-grown licences to the Open Source Initiative for approval. So what is going on here? In part,

Linus explains why open source works!

Linus Torvalds is often described as an open source champion, interested in licensing only insofar as it affects his ability to share code and improve software more quickly. However, his real position is more complicated -- and to some, perhaps surprising. Asked point-blank which is more important, sharing code or empowering users -- the declared goal of the free software champions whom Torvalds is routinely depicted as being in opposition with -- and his first response in what he calls "the usual Linus polite words" is "That's a really stupid question. Why do you put it as an 'either or' kind of concept?" He then goes on to explain that, because open source operates in the same manner as scientific query, and is a matter of enlightened self-interest, sharing code and empowering users "are not at odds at all" -- a view that, in the end, places him closer to the free software position than

How to build your online Proxy ?

All, let me define what and why is an online Proxy : It is a site/service/program that you use to mask/hide your IP from the sites you visit, and allows you to visit sites that are blocked by your current Internet Provider (Internet provider can be your School, your Work, your University, your Silly network administrator ,or your Country censorship). How to Build an online Proxy: i) The most challenge you may face is to find a hosting company that allows you to host your proxy script - most Hosting providers doesn't allow you to do so-. Wireless Software for Linux Cleared of Legal Uncertainty by SFLC

Development of OpenHAL, a wireless network component for Linux, can now resume unfettered after months of legal uncertainty. OpenHAL allows people with wireless cards based on technology from Atheros Communications, Inc. to connect to networks using solely free and open source software. Earlier this year, allegations were made that OpenHAL might include material that infringed the copyright of Atheros' proprietary HAL software. The Linux Wireless developers asked the Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC) to investigate these rumors, and SFLC agreed to help on a pro-bono basis. SFLC subsequently conducted a confidential audit, carefully comparing OpenHAL to Atheros' proprietary HAL code. After performing the audit, SFLC concluded that OpenHAL does not infringe copyrights held by Atheros. As a result, OpenHAL development can now continue safely, unencumbered by legal uncertainty so long as the OpenHAL developers continue their work in isolation from Atheros' proprietary code

Microsoft’s next version is free

Microsoft’s next version of its small-business/home productivity suite, due imminently, will be free and ad-funded. Microsoft Works 9.0 — which will be the new product’s name, if Microsoft opts to stick with its current nomenclature — might also debut at some point as Microsoft-hosted low-end productivity service , as many have been speculating. A hosted version of Works would give Microsoft a head-to-head competitor with Google Docs & Spreadsheets and other consumer- and small-business focused services, analysts have said. For the time being, however, the new version of Works will be ad-funded, according to Satya Nadella, the newly minted Corporate Vice President of Microsoft’s Search & Advertising Platform Group. Nadella told me during an interview on July 27 that Microsoft recently released the new ad-funded version of Microsoft Works. If Works 9.0 is out, I haven’t found it yet — other than a couple download links on torrents and other sharing sites. Anyone else se
